Overview of Spinal Fusion Surgery: |
This information is provided by MedTrava, Medical Tourism experts. |
Spinal fusion is a surgery that joins two or more vertebrae. Spinal fusion is major surgery, usually lasting several hours. To complete the spinal surgery, a surgeon will stimulate the growth of new bone by implanting metal or bone (obtained either from the patient's hip or from a bone bank) on the affected vertebrae. |
Candidates for this procedure: |
1. |
You should have severe disability from your back pain, such as being unable to perform your job or bathe yourself. |
2. |
You already should have tried conservative care--such as self-treatment, pain relievers, and exercise--at least for six months without success. |
3. |
3. The back problem should be localized, that is, confined to one to two levels of the spine, with no deformity. |

About Disc Fusion surgery abroad |
This information is provided by MedTrava, Medical Tourism experts. |
A spine fusion is a surgery performed to link together individual segments, or vertebrae, within the spine. Between each of the vertebrae is a soft cushion called a disc. The disc spaces allow each vertebrae to bend slightly; this motion allows us to bend forward and arch backwards. A spine fusion is a surgery that is done to link together two or more vertebrae. When there is a problem with the vertebrae (often a problem with the disc space), your doctor may recommend a spine fusion to eliminate the motion that occurs within that portion of the spine. By linking together the vertebrae, your doctor is trying to eliminate the source of your back problem. |

Risks of Spinal Fusion Surgery |
Although the degree of risk depends on factors like your age and overall state of health, some of the risks are: |
Pain at the bone graft site |
Failure of the fusion process and/or breakage of metal implants |
Deep venous blood clots that may also lead to pulmonary embolism |
Nerve injury |
Graft rejection. |
Superficial infection |
Deep infection |
Excessive bleeding |
Chronic neck pain |
Damage to the nerves, spinal chord, esophagus, or vocal chords |
Most patients will need to have another spinal operation in the future. In addition, some research indicates up to one quarter of patients will develop a new cervical isc disease within 10 years of their surgery. |

Recovery from Spinal Fusion Surgery overseas |
You should be able to get up and move around within a few hours of your surgery, but you can expect to remain in the hospital for 6-9 days after your surgery. Although this is longer than you would stay in a U.S. hospital, you will benefit from the extra supervision of doctors and nurses during your recovery. You will be able to fly home after your surgeon approves it.
Pain is common in the first 48 hours after any surgery, but you will be able to request powerful painkillers if you need them. It takes from several weeks to several months to heal from this surgery, depending on your age, condition and what level of activity you plan to return to. The type of healing that needs to occur after spinal fusion is similar to recovery from a broken bone; it will take anywhere from three months to a year to fully heal. Your doctor may recommend you wear a back brace during recovery. |
