Greetings!

Did you know that one in eight American women are diagnosed with breast cancer? Worldwide, 8.6 million women will die of the silent killer - heart disease - this year.

Chronic diseases-such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes-are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Chronic diseases account for 70% of all deaths (1.7 million) in the U.S. These diseases cause major limitations in daily living for 1 out of 10 Americans. Although chronic diseases are common and costly health problems, they are also among the most preventable.

Adopting healthy behaviors such as eating nutritious foods, being physically active, and getting tested regularly can prevent or control these diseases. While it's expensive to get regular screening and diagnostics in the US, there are several alternatives abroad.

To help you get started on the path to good health, we've included a link to a tasty, easy recipe that's heart-healthy and chock-full of antioxidants to help prevent cancer.  This month we're also featuring our Wellness Exam, which will save you thousands of dollars on a complete diagnostic check-up at one of our partner hospitals abroad.

If it's too late for you to prevent your disease, don't worry--MedTrava can help. Just contact us and our case managers can help you determine if medical travel is right for you.

MedTrava Puts a Smile Back on Yet Another Patient!

Laurie Payne is smiling wide these days--not only because she just returned from an exhilarating vacation to India, but because she got a full new set of much needed dental implants while in India.

medtrava in the newsThe Austin, Texas resident saved over $60,000 by traveling to Bangalore, India, for her implant surgery, and she was able to have her dental treatment performed by an accomplished maxillofacial surgeon.  During her surgery, the dentist was able to reshape Laurie's face to elongate it and improve her natural smile line.

"I could not have been happier with my surgeon.  Her care and sincerity were coupled with professional knowledge that I never anticipated," she says.

Traveling to India allowed Laurie to complete the first stage of her surgery in one day - no easy feat since she had 22 teeth pulled and 16 implants put in!  After an in-person examination by the dentist, Laurie was able to undergo surgery the very next day, and she was discharged from the hospital a day later.
In the U.S., besides being outrageously expensive, this procedure would have been done on an outpatient basis completed over a few months--which would mean more time, more pain, and less supervision during the recovery process. Laurie spent a total of ten days in India, which left her with plenty of time to enjoy the country.

After she was discharged from the hospital, MedTrava arranged for Laurie to stay at an Ayurveda resort in Bangalore where she could continue to recover while receiving massages, steam baths, and other Ayurvedic treatments designed to relieve stress and improve overall well-being.

After a week, her mouth had healed enough to receive a temporary fixed prosthesis to wear for the next few months.  She will receive permanent veneers after six months, at which point her implants will have had enough time to take root. She is already planning a return trip to India with a few friends who have decided to undergo treatment in India after hearing Laurie's account of her fabulous experience.

"The care in hospital was far superior to any I have ever experienced in the U.S., anywhere!  The food and shopping were amazing...I came back with a great smile and deeper friendships; I am looking so forward to returning to the beautiful city of Bangalore with friends in August for my permanent teeth!"

Prevention is Cheaper than Cure
In these turbulent economic times it can be hard to justify the added expense of routine check-ups.  But regular screenings can help prevent catastrophic illnesses, making preventative healthcare more economical in the long run.

Our overseas hospitals offer you the latest technology to affordably diagnose any issues or potential problems you have so you can address them before they interfere with your life.  You can get all the blood tests, along with 2D Echo, Bone Densitometry, Color Doppler, Computerized Pathology, CT Scan, ECG, MRI, Sonogram, Stress Test for less than what it costs to get an MRI here!

One of our patients who recently returned from a trip to India took advantage of this wellness exam and received thousands of dollars worth of tests for only a few hundred dollars. "I was surprised to learn of some issues that I had. Thank goodness I went through the tests and found out early enough to manage the issues," she says.  "This alone was well worth the trip."

Here are some of the tests your can expect to receive when you go abroad for a Wellness Exam:

A Brilliance 64-Slice CAT Scanner can gather a high-resolution image of a heart, brain or a pair of lungs in about five seconds. A scan of the whole body, takes about 30 seconds.

A Dual-Energy X-ray (DEXA) bone densiometry test to help detect the early stages of osteoporosis.  This technology exposes the patient to less radiation than other bone density tests.

A Color Doppler produces a picture of a blood vessel to detect an increased risk of a stroke.  The colors in this scan indicate the speed and direction of blood flow through the vessel.

An Electrocardiography (ECG) exam indicates the overall rhythm of the heart and diagnoses weaknesses and abnormal rhythms in different parts of the heart muscle.
Ayurvedic Healing Foods
At over 5,000 years old, Ayurveda, or the Science of Life, is the oldest form of medicine still practiced today. Ayurveda believes life forces are composed of three main elements: Vata, Pitha, and Kapha.  To attain optimum health, individuals need to maintain a proper balance of these forces.  An Ayurvedic treatment plan will address all aspects of a person's life, including diet; sleep; and physical, mental, and spiritual self-control. Below are a few foods and their associated healing properties used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Lemons are both purifying and nourishing, and they stimulate digestion. For reducing toxins, drink unsweetened lemonade as many times during the day as desired.
Ghee (clarified butter) is among the best rejuvenating and longevity-promoting foods. It aids digestion and calms the nerves. Ghee's rate of absorption is high, making it an excellent medium for transporting the nutrients of other foods to the tissues.
Almonds are nourishing and life-supporting. Ayurveda advises blanching and peeling almonds as their skins are slightly toxic. Eat a handful of almonds daily to increase strength and energy.
Mung Beans are among the best legumes for their supreme digestibility and health-giving qualities. Mung beans are particularly nourishing when mixed with rice or other grains.
Ginger is often referred to as "the universal medicine." Dried ground ginger is more concentrated in its flavor and its effects. To aid digestion, sprinkle a thin slice of fresh ginger with lemon juice and salt, and eat one-half hour before a meal.
Juicy, Seasonal Fruits are both highly nutritive and purifying. Juicy fruits should be completely ripe for maximum healing value.
Green, Leafy Vegetables are both nutritive and purifying. Their bitter flavor stimulates the liver, helps balance blood sugar, and aids skin conditions. Prepare with a little ghee or oil.

Founder's Message

The MedTrava Group

The month of May was host to the National Women's Health Week.

I realized the importance of regular check-ups for women (and men) after my mother was diagnosed with cancer.  Thankfully, my mother successfully - but expensively - battled cancer. Without insurance, my mother's hospital bills were astronomical.  After my mother's experience, I knew I needed to help others facing similar health crises in the U.S.

While our main focus is helping patients afford treatments like cardiac or orthopedic surgery, I recently became aware of the tremendous value our Wellness Exam offers. We've had several  recent patients take advantage of this and  get full diagnostic checkups while they are overseas. Tests that would total several thousand dollars in the U.S cost only a few hundred dollars abroad, and can let you know if you have any risk factors that you weren't aware of.

In the spirit of controlling cancer and other diseases, I encourage you to take advantage of this fabulous program. My mother recently received a clean bill of health after receiving this Wellness Checkup, and I am planning on scheduling my own appointment while I'm in India next month conducting my regular review of our hospitals.

Words from a Patient Companion

MedTrava encourages patients to bring along a companion to provide moral support o
n their journey. We're so committed to encouraging this that we allow the companion to stay for free in the hospital room, with meals included!

Companion: Charlie B.

Our experiences at the hospital were v
ery positive. The staff was extremely helpful and competent, and the doctors were just as well educated and experienced as any American doctor would be. The chief doctor who treated my friend was absolutely
first rate. After the surgery, he stopped by the room
every day to see how she
was doing and took a personal interest in her
care. I have seen many American doctors that don't take as muc time as our Indian doctor did for patient care.

My accommodations at the hospital were quite comfortable. I slept in N's room in a separate bed, and had no problems sleeping. The hospital provided us
with a key to a locked
drawer in the room where we could store our valuables. The room had a TV and a DVD player, so we were able to watch the movies we had brought along to India with us. The room also had a computer with internet access which allowed me to stay in touch with friends in the U.S.

After being discharged from the hospital, MedTrava arranged for us to stay in a four star-hotel in the nicest part of town until we were ready to fly home.  This was a wonderful way to end such an interesting adventure.
